Below are pictures of the baby possums which were orphaned in our back yard in 2003. Polo found the first one very late at night and we figured it was just coming out to eat so shooed the dogs back inside and didn't think much more of it.
Polo found what we thought was the same baby the next several nights in a row, so I looked up information on possums on the internet and found out that they usually only stay in one area for a few days at a time and they move on and they generally will not bother pets. We just tried to keep the dogs from bothering the baby and figured they would move on.
Several days later, I saw the baby during the day on the deck so I knew something was not quite right and found a wildlife rehabber, who lived in the area, to ask what, if anything, I could do since the possum was obviously distressed being out in the daytime on my deck.
The Rehabber said that the baby had probably fallen off the mom when she was going through the yard and the mother would not be back for it so if I could catch it she would take it and raise it until it was old enough to be out on it's own. She also said there might be more than one baby so we should "trap" for several nights in a row to make sure we got them all
The "trap" consisted of putting blueberry yogurt (apparently a delicacy to possums) and cat food out to attract them. We also used Polo to help identify where they were on each given night. John was then able to catch each one. We kept them in a dog crate until they could be taken to the rehabber.
Over the course of the next 3 nights we ended up catching 7 babies which we took to the rehabber. She kept them until they were old enough to take care of themselves and released them back into the wild
